Phonics
At YSE, we teach our children to read using phonics. Phonics helps teach children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension.
They learn to pronounce each letter, spell correctly, and put together their ideas step-by-step.
Reading
We use our reading books starting from the beginning reader level to the higher Lexile measure level books up to grade 3 for the young learners that join our playgroup.
Children are sent home a book which they have read with the teachers at YSE.
Reading for pleasure is important for children to fuel their curiosity and it has the strongest effect on vocabulary development.
"Between the ages of four and nine, your child will have to master some 100 phonics rules, learn to recognize 3,000 words with just a glance, and develop a comfortable reading speed approaching 100 words a minute. He must learn to combine words on the page with a half-dozen squiggles called punctuation into something — a voice or image in his mind that gives back meaning. "
